METU was founded in 1956 to contribute to the development of Turkey and middle eastern countries in general and specifically to train people to create a skilled workforce in the fields of natural and social sciences. Over 23.000 students registered to METU in the 2009-2010 academic year. Approximately 25% of these are enrolled in graduate programs. Each year, 800-1200 students from nearly 50 different foreign countries and pursuing various academic degrees attend METU. METU actively took part in and managed many Med-Campus, MEDA, COST, Eureka, NASA, NATO, NSF, UN, World Bank, Jean Monnet, INCO, EUMEDIS, 6th and 7th Framework, Erasmus Mundus ECW, Leonardo and Socrates projects. METU has also involved in 59 FP6 projects, 48 of them have already been completed. Furthermore, 32 FP7 projects are still in execution. METU’s central laboratories is an independent, multidisciplinary research centre supporting research programs on advanced materials, including nano structured materials as well as life sciences. In addition METU hosts the Centre for Solar Energy Research and Applications (GÜNAM). There are currently 14 faculty members affiliated with GÜNAM with a total number of 25 graduate students working under the supervision of these faculty members. There are also 3 engineers, one technician, and one secretary working at GÜNAM.
