The company has been founded in 1987 by G. Rapp while still working in basic research (until 1989 Max-Planck-Institute for Medical Research Heidelberg, 1989-1999 EMBL Outstation Hamburg, 1999-2002 Max-Planck-Institute for Colloid and Interface Science, Potsdam with office at DESY Hamburg) in various fields of biophysics like protein crystallography, photo-cycle of bacteriorhodopsin, studies on muscle contraction and lipid polymorphism. He is author / co-author of almost 100 reviewed publications in these fields. Until 2002 the activity of the company was restricted to light sources for un-caging studies.
In 2002 G. Rapp left Max-Planck-Institute and is since developing Rapp OptoElectronic GmbH. The majority of the products are own developments and are used for basic research primarily in life sciences. Products cover a broad range of light sources and microscope accessories for applications like flash photolysis of caged-compounds, FRAP, photo-activation of e.g. channelrhodopsin, ablation and cutting of tissue using light. Customers are found world wide. The company is exhibiting its products on at least 4-5 international scientific meetings like Neuroscience and Biophysics meeting in the USA, FENS, Biophysics congress in Genova (2009), Physiological Society meetings in Germany, Göttinger Neurobiologentagung, ELMI and others. The successful use of products of the company is documented in numerous publications.
With the scientific background of the CEO of Rapp OptoElectronic GmbH in the field of Biophysics the company is in the position to develop special instrumentation not offered by other companies. Since 2002 the number of personnel has grown continuously. At present (2011) there are 15 full time equivalent employees (2 physicists, 10 engineers with different main focus, such as electrical, computer, optical, mechanical, 3 administrative employees). Altogether RAPP OptoElectronic GmbH’s personnel are a team of specialists.
